Morgan Tucker launches speed limit review service |
The Department for Transport have released their long awaited circular for setting local speed limits.
The detailed guidance is intended to assist local authorities in setting local speed limits and is designed to promote greater clarity and consistency. The new guidance should be used for setting all local speed limits on single and dual carriageway roads in both urban and rural areas. The guidelines are also to be used as the basis for developing route management strategies and speed management strategies required by the Local Transport Plan Process.
As a result of the new guidance there are a number of changes in speed limit setting policy and new requirements for Local Highway Authorities. For example, it will be necessary for all Traffic Authorities in England to undertake a review of their speed limits along all of their A and B class roads by 2011. In addition, the mean speed of traffic should now be used to assess the required speed limit.
