Morgan Tucker Project Wins Major Rail Award

The Rail Freight Logistics Facility that is meeting the need for up to 9000 tonnes of construction materials to be delivered to the Olympic Park development in Stratford, East London has won the coveted ‘Rail Freight Achievement of the Year Award’ at this year’s National Rail Awards.  The award was presented to Morgan Tucker’s client, DB Schenker during a glittering ceremony on 17th September 2009 at The Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.

Morgan Tucker was appointed by DB Schenker, in conjunction with the Olympic Development Agency (ODA), to provide a full turnkey solution to deliver the logistics facility for the Olympic Park development.

This complex project was delivered within an extremely tight timescale, ahead of schedule and budget. The average time of a construction project of this nature from feasibility through to construction could be as long as three years – Morgan Tucker and DB Schenker delivered it in twelve months.

The 28 acre site is located immediately adjacent to the southern boundary of the proposed main Olympic Stadium. The rail connected logistics centre enables all construction materials to be delivered to the Olympic Park by rail, thus saving 600 HGV movements a day across London and reducing the environmental impact of delivering construction materials to the Park by road.

In addition to the large volumes of materials being transported, the site has also been developed to enable two concrete manufacturing plants to be located within its confines, together with container storage and the potential for other manufacturing plants to be incorporated within the facility.

As Morgan Tucker Managing Director, Matthew Tucker explained “Our use of the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) form of contract ensured that design and construction work could be undertaken at the same time, rather than the traditional method of completing design work before construction could start. This approach meant that significant time and cost savings were delivered for the client, whilst still maintaining the high quality standards required. Morgan Tucker congratulates DB Schenker on its award and is proud to have contributed towards this most significant achievement within the UK’s rail freight industry during 2009.”
